Plans to knock down a former service station in Lymm and replace it with a supermarket will be discussed this week. Developers went to flatten the old Rushgreen Service Station and build a large food shop in its place. But neighbours and former Mayor Clr Sheila Woodyatt have objected to the plans which 
will be debated by councillors on Wednesday.
Planning officers at Warrington Town Hall say the scheme should go ahead. Residents say not only will the development hit the rural character of that part of Lymm, but that its opening could hit exisiting traders in the centre of the village nearby.
Clr Woodyatt said she had referred the application to the planning sub-committee because of the “serious local concern about the detrimental effect on the rural character of this part of Rushgreen Road, increase in traffic and potential harm to the viability of the shops in Lymm village centre.”
Neighbours say there is no need for the new shop with a Sainsbury’s Local available on The Cross and say it could threaten current businesses.
They also argue the increased traffic would worsen existing congestion which can build up on Rushgreen Road.
However, in a detailed report, planners say they believe at least half the new shoppers won’t currently shop in Lymm and say there is a quick turnaround for vacant units in the centre of Lymm - therefore reducing the threat of a new development.
The application will be discussed at 6.30pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Since it was formed in 1984 (when Lymm Youth Club merged with Oughtrington Rovers,) the club has gone from strength to strength and has grown to 20 teams including 3 all girl teams.
The Club was awarded Chartered Status by the FA and then was awarded Community Club status in 2011.
Nowadays, we are very privileged to have all of the clubs training sessions and matches taking place within the beautiful grounds of Lymm High School.
The 2013/14 season saw a big change to the management structure of the club with the introduction of level 2 FA Qualified Coaches, with access to all of the squads.
The improving standards of the players has come to the attention of several professional clubs, with more than half a dozen children training with Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Crewe. The club is also represented within the Cheshire Girls Squads.
Lymm Rovers Development Academy
This September will see the opening of the Lymm Rovers Development Academy. Open to children between 4 and 8 years of age, and taking place on Saturday mornings at 10.15.
The Academy will provide coaching within a fun, and progressive environment, the emphasis will be on learning new football skills and developing each child to the best of their ability.
All playing and coaching within this golden age of learning will follow current FA guidelines, which encourage play within a non-pressured environment.
We realise kids want to be part of a team so, In addition to the weekly coaching there will be regular indoor 5 a side tournaments involving teams from all around South Manchester, as well as matches arranged with like-minded clubs from the region.
